Empathy-Based Veterinary Engineering Framework (EBVEF)
Dr. Joie Lamar
Website edition: 2 November 2026
Abstract
Joie Lamar’s Empathy-Based Veterinary Engineering Framework connects technology design, ethics, and policy to make empathy an actionable principle in veterinary engineering. It comprises four interdependent pillars: Ethical Design Ontology; Multi-Species Participatory Design; Empathic Metrics and Evaluation; and Institutional Implementation and Policy Integration. The framework draws on bioethical and virtue ethics, systems and posthumanist ethics, and participatory design and slow technology. A conceptual welfare-monitoring application illustrates its proposed use. Empirical implementation, measurement, and validation remain areas for future research.
This abstract summarises the author-supplied conceptual paper. The website edition includes its full text and references, a cover, and a diagram.
